CHARLES FRÉGER
Born 1975 in Bourges, France. Lives and works in Rouen, France. Studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Rouen.
Charles Fréger’s oeuvre is almost exclusively dedicated to portraiture, particularly the study of uniformed and costumed collectives, along with the alternating identity of their members as both independent individuals and assimilated parts of a social group. He produces extensive series portraying individual members of social groups – such as sports clubs, military units or professional groups – who demonstrate their affiliation with the group in question via external manifestations such as uniforms, headwear, make-up, gestures, poses and even physical shape.
In the autumn of 2013, Charles Fréger travelled through Austria, the Czech Republic and Belgium visiting wienerberger production sites and making portraits of workers at the plants.
