HUBERT BLANZ

Born 1969 in Hindelang, Germany. Lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

The work of Hubert Blanz is concerned with architectural and urban utopias. He utilizes and combines various pictorial elements – some found images, others made by himself – to create virtual landscapes. The resulting works can be regarded as either realistic views, plans and networks, or as utopian models.

For wienerberger, Hubert Blanz spent several weeks at a Pipelife pipe factory in Austria, where he assembled sculptural constructions made of pipe elements. These were subsequently photographed and then digitally processed to create an intricately interwoven and cohesive rhizome-like whole. The resulting work is a fictional representation of a habitat based on a pipeline network that, although concealed from the eye as such, actually interpenetrates everything.
