ANA OPALIĆ

Born 1972 in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia (now Croatia). Lives and works in Zagreb, Croatia. Studied at the Academy of the Performing Arts, Zagreb.
Often of a long-term nature, the work processes pursued by Ana Opalić are focused on demographic, social and architectural-constructional changes resulting from economic developments, political upheavals and armed conflict, especially in her home country, the former state of Yugoslavia. In carefully composed work series, she records those radical social changes which are reflected in the altered appearance of the urban and rural landscape.
In the series made specifically for wienerberger, the flowers are still there, Opalić underlines the fact that having a house of one’s own is a fundamental human need. She shows houses in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina that were abandoned or damaged during the war and are now awaiting rebuilding and restoration. In this context, the flowers are a symbol of the hope that these places that were once permeated with family life might soon be brought back to life again.
