Many of Markus Krottendorfer’s works were created in places that are difficult to access, such as research facilities and industrial sites. His pictures may be of a documentary nature, but they tend to be hard to place geographically owing to the unusual nature of the site in question, as well as the very individual perspective adopted by the artist. His employment of unusual photographic techniques – often involving film materials and printing processes no longer in general use – reinforces the impression that his images date from another era; however, it is sometimes hard to say whether this lies in the past or in the future.

For INSIGHTS, Markus Krottendorfer visited Tondach plants in Gleinstätten in Austria and in Kanjiza and Békéscsaba in Hungary in 2016. The resulting photographs portray imposing individual machines that are at the very heart of the large-scale manufacturing process of clay products, thereby giving a powerful visual impression of the vast masses of raw materials that are processed in such plants.
