MARTIN KOLLAR

Born 1971 in Žilina, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia). Lives and works in Bratislava, Slovakia. Studied at the Academy of the Performing Arts, Bratislava.
Martin Kollar is a Slovakian photographer and film-maker, whose images invariably comprise subjects and scenes that have been in no way altered or manipulated by the artist, yet – taken out of their context – they have an unreal or contrived quality about them. His work is characterized by a combination of restraint, profound irony and serious reflection.
The works for INSIGHTS originate from diverse countries in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Poland, Ukraine). They show the brick as a valuable, durable and reusable product that, in many countries, is carefully collected when buildings are demolished and is then put aside for later use in other constructions.
