MIKLOS GAÁL

Born 1974 in Espoo, Finland. Lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and in Helsinki, Finland. Studied at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, as well as the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam.
A constantly recurring subject in Miklos Gaál’s work is the urban public space. In his large-format images of such sites – many are bird’s eye views – areas that are in sharp focus and others that are blurred to various degrees occur on one and the same plane. In all cases, the primary point of focus comprises individual persons going about their everyday business. As a result, the interest is concentrated on specific personal experience of the space in question rather than the depiction of some particular event or a view of the place in generalized terms. Although such photographs demand meticulous and elaborate preparations, the element of chance also has a vital role to play.
For INSIGHTS, Mikos Gaál created a new large-format work showing a public square in Amsterdam that might seem to have been chosen at random and which is covered by what, in large European cities, is now a typical mixture of brick facing, concrete slabs, asphalt and planted areas.
