ANDREA WITZMANN

Born 1970 in Vienna, Austria. Lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Studied at the Vienna University of Technology and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
Andrea Witzmann is an important representative of contemporary Austrian photography. Many of her works are created on extended wanderings through cities, suburban landscapes or remote residential and industrial areas, for the most part away from the hustle and bustle – devoid of people, but full of traces of life. The stopping of time is an important factor here, both in terms of her working method, the search for the motif, the deliberate choice of the frame and the time-consuming use of the large-format camera, as well as in the result, the freezing of time through the photograph taken. In a poetic way, her works describe episodes of decay and transience.
The multi-part work for INSIGHTS was created in Rome, symbol for history and the persistence of architectural cultural heritage. Witzmann’s motifs point to the remnants of an immanent past, revealing its substrate: the wall, the base, unshakable foundations of centuries-old, millennia-old bricks. ‘Here, the brick is a surrogate for that which was, a placeholder of the past burnt into history – just like photography itself,’ Witzmann explains.
