ANU VAHTRA

Born in Estonia in 1982. Lives and works in Tallinn, Estonia. Studied at the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallin and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.

In her artistic work, Anu Vahtra focuses primarily on specific architectural situations, often even including the spaces in which she exhibits. Through physical interventions and by adding minor structural features, she changes the space in question in a way that is barely perceptible at first glance. For her photographs, she subsequently chooses very specific sight angles that reveal the intention behind her interventions. Perspectives are accentuated or broken, shifting from spatial to flat, from large to small, from oblique to straight. Anu Vahtra thus questions the ability of photography to represent facts in an unambiguous manner.

For wienerberger, Anu Vahtra photographed bricks from the Aseri plant in Estonia, some of them defective or broken. Artfully presented in settings designed especially for this purpose, the bricks appear like sophisticated and precious sculptures. The viewer’s attention is directed to their special shape and the texture of the material, reinforced by the oversized representation relative to the background.
