MÅRTEN LANGE

Born in Sweden in 1984. Lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Studied photography at the Fotohögskolan, University of Gothenburg, and the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, UK.

Mårten Lange is an up-and-coming representative of young Swedish photography. In his comprehensive series, exclusively in black and white, he interconnects photographs from very different contexts and weaves them into associative networks. He combines strictly delineated images from nature with detailed views of man-made structures, thus establishing formal and content-related references between images which, at first sight, appear to have nothing in common. The human being, reduced to extremely small size or not visible at all, often appears as a subordinate actor in the play staged by the forces of nature and the tower-like structures he created. Taking a step back, the artist describes the slow but incessant cycles of emergence and erosion and the transience of human activity.

For INSIGHTS, Mårten Lange paid several visits to the Wienerberg area, the company’s historical place of origin and the location of its present and future headquarters. What was once the site of huge brick factories has been returned to nature. From the glass Twin Towers on the edge of this recreational area, wienerberger moved to its current headquarters in the immediate vicinity.
