THOMAS ALBDORF

Thomas Albdorf © Evelyn Binder

Born in Austria in 1982. Lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Studied Transmedia Art at the Vienna University of Applied Arts.

Thomas Albdorf explores the relationship between sculpture and photography. Many of the pictorial elements in his works originated not or only partially from his own camera, and some were even created without the use of any camera. The appropriation of physical or digital image material and its re-configuration or alienation through changes made in the studio, by means of computer models, image processing programs and various reproduction techniques, are the artist’s strategy of questioning the origin and truthfulness of images in today's digital world and exposing the characteristics of contemporary image production.

Thomas Albdorf’s new works are based on a wienerberger product catalogue preserved in the company's archives, from which customers ordered decorative architectural elements, sculptures, and other pottery around the turn of the century. After numerous iterations and mutations, the result can no longer be clearly assigned to a specific period or context.
