GEERT GOIRIS

Born 1971 in Bornem, Belgium. Lives and works in Antwerp.

Geert Goiris travels the world, seeks out unusual places and interprets them in enigmatic images. Even though his large-format camera takes very detailed photos, his pictures leave us plenty of room for interpretation. The staged meets the real, the strange meets the familiar, the dark meets the humorous. His works allow for different levels of meaning, they are not unambiguous, but activate our own imagination and subconscious associations that evoke feelings of fear and unease, but also of beauty and desire - depending on the images, experiences and thoughts we carry within us.

In his series for INSIGHTS, Goiris views the brick as a symbol-loaded embodiment of power and capital. Whoever holds the brick in his hand has the means to exercise power over others. They can flaunt their dominance and wealth by piling it up into buildings that demonstrate their authority or use it as currency on the playing field of social and economic constellations. But this power can also escape you and in turn - in the form of a projectile - be unleashed against you.
