HERTHA HURNAUS

Born 1964 in Linz, Austria. Lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Studied at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt, Vienna.

Hertha Hurnaus is one of Austria’s most renowned architectural photographers. In her free work, she focuses mainly on iconic buildings, with a special interest in late modern architecture in Austria and Central Europe, as well as on buildings in which historically significant events have taken place or important personalities have lived and worked. She is currently accompanying, among other projects, the elaborate restoration and reconstruction of the Austrian Parliament on Vienna’s Ringstraße, paying particular attention to rooms and spaces that will continue to be inaccessible to both those working there and the general public.

Hurnaus chose a similar approach for her INSIGHTS project, for which she explored another large representative building on Ringstraße, the Vienna City Hall, into the most hidden corners. In the supply shafts, cellar systems and roof structures, brick reveals itself as the very element providing the structural backbone of this neo-Gothic building.
