MISHA DE RIDDER

Born 1971. Lives and works in Amsterdam.
Dutch artist Misha de Ridder explores the pictorial properties of light and space in his work. He focuses primarily on geographical, geological and climatic conditions and phenomena. His mostly razor-sharp and yet very calm photographs of nature invite contemplation and an intimate examination of the environments that surround us. Mechanical representations, produced by the camera's machine eye, open up new sensual, sometimes magical perspectives on the seemingly familiar and bring the viewer into contact with the natural elements.
The series created for INSIGHTS shows a rock formation in the riverbed of a torrential stream in the Swiss Alps. The brutal force of the water breaks down the raw rock into increasingly smaller particles, until its sediments eventually land in a distant river delta, where they can be extracted as clay for brick production. The passing clouds change the respective lighting mood and thus also the perception of the rock depicted. The variations in the images symbolize the unstoppable mutability of things. All elements are interconnected and subject to constant change. Even the hardest rock cannot resist the constant flow of change in the interplay of the elements.
