MICHAL LUCZAK

Born 1983 in Katowice, Poland. Lives and works in Poland. Studied at the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Silesian University in Opava, Czech Republic.

Michal Luczak is a widely exhibited Polish photographer specializing in documentary photography. Born in 1983 in Katowice, his work focuses on ecological and related social issues. Luczak's works offer not only visual but also cultural and social insights into the transformation of living spaces. His long-term series often reflect his own roots in Upper Silesia, a post-industrial region shaped by mining traditions.

For his contribution to INSIGHTS, Luczak visited the Oleśnica brickworks in Poland. He focuses on the production process, underscored by his classic documentary black-and-white style, to depict the unchanging production process of a brick. This process has hardly changed to this day. Clay, water, heat, and human effort – these factors have always been and remain the foundation of production. The title RAW refers both to these fundamental elements of the creation process and to the term "raw" in photography, describing an unprocessed raw file.
